Student Life Cinema

the SLC Theatre

SLC Theatre FSU's Student Life Cinema program is located in the heart of campus in the Askew Student Life Center, a satellite building of the Oglesby Union. The program is housed in a state-of-the-art movie theatre designed by the FSU Film School, featuring an 18' x 43' movie screen, stadium-style seating accomodating 380 guests, 35mm and video projection, and 5.1 Dolby Digital sound. The SLC also has prime seating available for guests in wheelchairs, and infrared headphones for the hearing impaired.

Programs

The SLC film program features movies up to six nights a week. Movies and events are scheduled by the Film Committee, a group of FSU students dedicated to selecting films for the diverse tastes of the student body. The Film Committee brings every type of movie to the university community, with titles that range from Hollywood blockbusters to foreign, independent, and documentary favorites. The SLC also hosts screenings of films one night a week for the Multicultural Film Class, one of the most popular courses on campus. On average, 85,000 guests see a movie in the span of the year. Movies are free for FSU students with a valid FSUCard and only $5 for non-students. The Student Life Cinema program has a tradition of bringing guest filmmakers to FSU to talk about their works, as well as hosting events and Q&A sessions with famous artists. Former guests have included director Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs), actor Anthony Rapp (Rent), director Spike Lee (Malcolm X), and most recently comedian and director David Wain (Wet Hot American Summer, The Ten). The SLC has also featured many documentary filmmakers including George Butler and Caroline Alexander (Pumping Iron, Endurance) and Jehane Noujaim (Control Room). In addition to filmmakers, faculty and other local experts often make an appearance to give introductions before films or lead discussions on film-related themes or documentary subject matter. On the lighter side, other guest artists include modern cult filmmaker Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead trilogy, Bubba Ho-tep), cartoonists Matt and Mike Chapman (Homestar Runner), and Dave Willis and Dana Snyder (creators and voices of Aqua Teen Hunger Force). And recently, the SLC played part in hosting the first annual Tallahasse Film Festival.
