Student Life Cinema

Co-Sponsorship

THEATER RESERVATION POLICY

The primary purpose of the Student Life Theatre is to serve as a movie venue for the Film Committee of the Student Life Cinema Program. Student organizations and academic departments may request use of the space during building hours when the theater is not being used for movie screenings or maintenance. Requests for theater space may be submitted in two ways:

Reserved Event

The theatre has a limited degree of availability during the day between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Public performance rights must be secured for any movie shown in the theatre. Reservation requests should be submitted to Guest Services (850-644-6083), who will contact ASLC administration for approval.

Co-Sponsored Event

Organizations may have evening film screenings as part of the SLC film series with the approval of the SLC Film Committee. These co-sponsorships are subject to many considerations and are solely at the discretion of the Film Committee and ASLC and Program Directors. Typically resources, financial and otherwise, are shared between the two co-sponsoring groups.

Legal public performance rights must be secured for every film shown in the Student Life Theatre. Organizational representatives (holding a leadership position within the group) may apply for a co-sponsored event by completing a film co-sponsorship request (click to download a pdf). It should be submitted to the Infodesk (located just outside the theatre lobby), attn: Lori Vaughn or Bob Howard, who will forward requests to the Film Committee for consideration. The Film Committee plans the schedule well in advance, so co-sponsorship requests must be submitted several months before the proposed screening date. For additional information, contact Kathy Barber at 850-644-4504 or ksbarber@admin.fsu.edu or Bob Howard at 850-644-0034 or rhoward@mailer.fsu.edu.

PLANNING A MOVIE EVENT

If you are planning a movie event outside of the Student Life Cinema movie theatre, you will need to reserve space with Guest Services. (If you expect a large audience, we recommend Moore Auditorium or one of the Union Ballrooms.) Complete a Special Event Permit from the Student Activities Center at http://union.fsu.edu/eventplanning/. Secure the 'Public Performance Rights' of the film you want to show. Remember, simply having the DVD or VHS does NOT give you the legal right to screen the movie in public. Please refer to the 'Public Performance Rights' handout on the website above for more information. The rights for many films are available through Swank Motion Pictures. Search their catalog for the film you want to show, then contact FSU's rep, Tracy Hedrick at 1-800-876-5577, or email her at tracyhedrick@swank.com If Swank does not hold the rights please follow the 'Distributors' links on the main page to search other distributors' catalogs. If you have trouble finding the rights to the film please email Kathy Barber at ksbarber@admin.fsu.edu. If you will be serving food at your event, you must also submit a food permit which can also be found at the event planning website listed above.
